I took my copy of Chicago back today, and the new disk has some similar scratches on it as the one I took back, but not as pronounced. I'll give it a try and hope it works because I really don't want to have to go back again.
The next two days I have off from work and I can use them to get over this damned cold I've been suffering through the past few days. The sore throat and coughing and sniffling and sneezing, I can do without it all. Hopefully a little rest and it'll go away. And some soup. I love soup when I'm feeling under the weather. Damn, I'll have to stop on my way home tonight and pick some up at a convenience store because I don't think we have anything at home. Well, I know I have some tomato soup, but that's not the right kind when feeling ill. Chicken noodle or vegetable, that's what I'm talking about.
Two days off, then I'll be back for two days, then another two days off. That's not bad, and one of those days is Labour Day, so I get paid anyway. Yay!

Huh. I bought Chicago on DVD today and I took a peek at it, and it looks a little scuffed, but not from use. I'll try it out this weekend at some point and if that affects the playback, I'm going to return it. It does appear that the place I bought it from opens their DVD's up to insert magnetic anti-theft devices, and that sucks because I prefer my packaging unopened. I remember once buying one at Blockbuster and it turned out they only had the display one left, something I didn't know until they started putting the disk back into the case, and there were definite signs on the disk that it had been handled. I'm sorry, did I buy a previously viewed DVD? If not, I don't want to see any damned finger prints on the thing, so I immediately cancelled the purchase.
Seriously, if you're buying something new instead of used, there has to be a reason and my reason is I want stuff that hasn't been previously handled. I'm a little anal that way. So I'll go home, put this DVD into a couple of players (mine, my roommate's, and probably the player on my computer too) to make sure it works properly on all of them, which will be a real pain in the ass because that would require watching the whole movie on each to make sure there are no problems. Maybe I'll just take it back and get a new one.

I need to buy a gift for our supervisors here, because I'm the senior employee on at work tonight (a rarity) and oh my god, I don't know how the supervisors get through a shift without killing somebody. Luckily there are a couple of other good people here right now or there would be blood on my hands. I had to apologize already for snapping at one co-worker. Not good for only being back for three days from my holiday. Maybe I should have taken three weeks.

It was raining last night and the sidewalk between work and the train was inundated with worms. I haven't seen that many little slimy crawlers in years. Okay, so dry worms aren't exactly slimy, but wet ones definitely have that sheen to them. I tried to avoid stepping on any, but there was at least one little squish underfoot that led me to suspect I wasn't entirely successful. Except for mosquitos and certain bugs that wander about in my house, I try to avoid killing. If I can catch something and set it free outside, I'll usually try to do that. Or I'll toss it into a web and feed a spider because spiders need to eat too, and that'll teach those freeloading bugs to eat my crumbs and other droppings!

I need to go back on holiday. It hasn't taken long for the pains in the ass to start up again, but it's never supposed to be easy your last day before you go or your first day back.
I did have a good time while I was away spending so much time at the Fringe Festival. Not only did I get to spend some time volunteering, but I saw nine shows. Yes, nine. That's more theatre in 10 days than I've seen in the past several years. To make it even better, not a single one was bad, and a few were even downright brilliant. I won't bother listing them all, but I will comment on my top three.
Shylock - The best show I've seen this year. A fantastic one-man show about art and sensibilities. Shakespeare was brilliant, no doubt, but he was still a man of his time with all the prejudices of his time. Does that mean we should rewrite his plays, rewrite history, or just not put those plays that may offend on the stage anymore? Or better yet, treat the audience as intelligent and stage his plays the way they were written. Thought-provoking and well performed.
Sorority Vixens- The funniest thing I've seen in years. Comedy and music, it didn't leave much to talk about other than how well it was done, but that didn't matter because it was so incredibly entertaining. The only real flaw was that not every singing voice was equally strong, but those that weren't (particularly the sorority vixen played by a drag queen) made up for it by being side-splitting hilarious.
Tyrannous Rex- A one-woman show like no other I've ever seen. This performer didn't do a monologue, she put on an entire play with multiple parts all done by her. Female and male, human and bicycle-riding leopard, she did them all and quite brilliantly shifting from one role to the next transforming herself vocally and physically without missing a beat. Truly a wonder to behold.
My only beef with the Fringe this year were the t-shirts, which were made by another company than last year and they made them hang-dry. We're not talking fancy clothes here, people, but friggin' t-shirts! You don't make t-shirts hang-dry only! Geeze.
Now it's my roommates' turn to go away for a while. They're off camping tomorrow, so I'll have the upstairs to myself for a while. That will make a nice break for a bit, but I'll probably start missing them after a couple of days.

I just dropped by work to check next month's schedule, send an e-mail, and look to see how much money I have left. What the heck, I thought to myself, let's drop by and leave a note in my diary! I'm having a great time at the Fringe and have seen more theatre in the past week than I have in several years. I'm loving it! Anyway, I have to run, but I'm back on Wednesday. See you then.

It's very hard for me to get pissed off today, and when I do, it's hard to stay pissed. In a greatly short period of time, I'm outta here for two weeks! How can't I not be excited over my first holiday in almost a year and a half? Holiday though, not vacation as I won't be going anywhere other than the Fringe Festival. I just hope I have as much fun as I expect to and it's not too much like work, or I'll have just wasted this time off.
I won't be back to work until August 27th, so I won't be writing much if at all. If I make it to the library, I might be able to get to it but I won't be making any trips just to do that because hey, I'm on holidays!
See you in two weeks!

Huh. I don't know what's wrong with my archives right now, but I can't seem to access anything prior to June. I wouldn't even have noticed if I didn't try to check out something I wrote in May. When I try to repost them in Blogger, I get error messages. I guess that's what happens when I start getting comfortable with the website. They were doing so good too, with no problems for a few months now.
Maybe it's time to finally start working on my new website. The only problem is I'll still have to use Blogger or something else for my diary, because I can't install any special blogging software at work and doing it all manually again is just too much of a pain in the butt.

I'm regretting taking this shift right now because suprise, it's been busy, but it has slowed down the past few minutes for the first time in days. I'm afraid to say anything though in case it starts right back up again. Any regrets I do have though should go away in a few days when I come in to pick up my paycheque. During my holidays. It'll suck having to come in during my holidays, but I can't really afford to go two weeks without getting paid. Next month we're finally going to a direct deposit method, but that'll be too late.
Direct deposit. Wow, I really need something new to write about...

I'm doing it again, staying up late playing video games. That's not the best thing to do when I have to get to work the next day, but hey, it's something to do anyway.
We had an incredibly large thunderstorm in Edmonton last night. It knocked out power in areas all over the city, and when I was waiting in a well covered area for my bus on the way home, under a low overpass, it blew water on us. It was so bad that the train was unable to run for a large part of today because of flooding. I had to take one of Edmonton Transit's contigency buses to get to work, and it wasn't too bad getting me here just a couple of minutes late. The only thing is that as we were going to my stop, I overheard the driver's radio announcing that the train was now running for most of the track, and it was going from my point of departure to my destination. Of course.
Speaking of floods, I got an e-mail letting me know that my autographed picture of Shirley Maclaine that was damaged when the basement I was living in flooded will be replaced by Ms. Maclaine. That's just an incredible thing for her to do so I'd like to give her this public thanks. Now I just have to work on replacing all the other damaged ones. Luckily a few survived undamaged, and I got my Bob Newhart one after the flood.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record... IT'S REALLY FUCKING BUSY TONIGHT! Pardon the profanity, but holy crap, I have no idea why it's been like this all friggin' week. Hell, every shift lately seems to be just going and going and going. I'm really starting to regret taking the upcoming Saturday shift because of it, no matter how badly I need the money.
Today has had it's moment. Like when I was sitting too far down in my chair, went to throw something into the garbage, and wound up falling out of my chair into a somewhat backwards crouch. That was only embarrassing. What really hurt was later on when I was trying to scarf down my lunch in between the busy, busy work and I took a good chomp down on my tongue. It was my molars that hit it, so I didn't draw blood, but it hurt real good.
Luckily I have my Donald Duck Koosh ball with me. I bought the thing years ago at The Disney Store because it was a) cute and b) seemed just the thing for stress. It's Donald Duck, who is famous for losing his temper and that seemed just so right. I've squeezed, pulled, and hurled this thing at the floor and ground so many times the poor guy is in pretty rough shape. It does feel good though and he has given me something to vent my mighty rage on when it would otherwise squished into a tiny little ball and shoved down deep into my psyche.
Not that I have a temper. Not me. I'm a sweet little bundle of happiness.

It's been really busy yet again tonight and the computer I was at has crapped out. That means I'll have to keep this short and sweet, otherwise I'll have to stay later after work and I really want to go home. Argh. Can you believe I actually said yes to taking a shift on Saturday? I need the money, but more importantly I'm on holidays soon after so what the heck. But still, argh. I don't need another night of this stuff.
But I do need the money.

The countdown to my holidays is on! Four days including today, two days off, one more shift then I'm sooooo outta here! It's certainly been busy enough the past couple of days to really make me appreciate the time off I've got coming up. My only concern is that volunteering at the Fringe might be too much like working, so if it is I may not do it again next year. At least, not on my holidays. I really like the idea of how many plays I'll be going to see.
And now for a word from our sponsor...
***
The day is a scorcher. The sweat, where it's not pooling on your body, is forming a shimmering layer reflecting the sun off your skin and pasting your clothes in ways you never thought possible. You need to cool off. You need refreshment. You need an ice-cold Coke. Summer and Coca-Cola, made for each other and made for you. Always Coca-Cola.

This is killing me. It's so freakin' busy tonight. I finish one thing and there are three more to take its place. I had something else to write about but it's completely slipped my mind. Urgh. I should go anyway. Trying to write with so much going on is only making me way too stressed.

Aaaaaaaargh! I got to my bus stop early today, then proceeded to wait for my bus. And waited. And waited. Oh boy, was I getting pissed off. The bus I was waiting for never came, and I needed it to get to work on time. I stood there and seethed, all ready to ask the driver of the next bus what the heck happened to the one that was supposed to leave at 2:40. Then I was going to ask if there would be any way for them to contact my work to let them know I'd be late because of their error. Then from work I was going to call ETS to complain about the bus that never showed. Damn, I was steamed!
After a while the next bus came trundling along. Finally! I got on, paid my fare (I'm not getting a bus pass this month because of my holidays) and asked the driver what happened to the last bus. He said there wasn't one. What? There was supposed to be one that left at 2:40! Nope, he said, there wasn't. I don't know what the hell he was talking about, so I decided to pull out my schedule and point out the bus that is supposed to leave at 2:40. That's when he told me there isn't one that leaves at that time because today is a holiday and they're running on Sunday schedules.
Oh.
That's right, today is a friggin' civic holiday and I forgot about it. It doesn't even have a name, I don't even get overtime for working today. It's just a civic holiday. Happy Civic Holiday, everyone!
I did apologize profusely to the driver, then and later when I got off the bus. He was good about it, and admitted he forgot about it too until someone reminded him soon enough to get to work on time. Me, I was half an hour late.
