Graveyard shifts are so much more fun when the kids at home don't let you have uninterrupted sleep the days leading up to them. I'm tired but I need to go to the bank before I go home. Fortunately for a good chunk of the day the kids are at school, but not for nearly long enough and if the dogs get worked up I can say goodbye to another 8 solid hours.
Yawn.

Oh, sweet sweet Friday. Two loverly days off now, guv'nor! That's how excited I am, I'm turning into a Cockney lass. Clean yer chimney fer ya?
It's been a long week, though at least one of only five days, and I'm happy to be going home for an actual weekend again. I'll enjoy this while it lasts, because next week I'm losing them and will be back to having weekdays off. It's not like I have any sort of a life though so it's not too bad. Just different shows to sit on the couch and watch.
They'll be graveyard shifts I'm going on next, so it's back to trying to stay up all night for the next few nights, not going to bed until well after the sun is up and it is coming up later (I love autumn, by the way). There will be times tonight it'll be hard, and I may even drift off on the couch, but I'll make it through and by Monday the night won't be a problem.

I haven't really mentioned it here, but I'm a fan of Big Brother. I enjoy Survivor as well, but that show is just beginning for the season (and I can't wait to get home to see tonight's episode) and Big Brother 4 came to an end last night.
I've watched all four seasons of it so far, and all six, now seven, seasons of Survivor (though the first two I didn't watch until well into the season) and never have I seen a show end in such acrimony. The sheer dislike of almost everyone for the final two and pretty much all around was palpable. Yesterday's winner, Jun, said that the lack of congratulations from her former housemates did put a damper on her victory, but frankly she asked for it. There was so much nastiness around the house and in the diary room from so many of the participants that hurt feelings were going to be inevitable. The diary room is where they go to speak privately to the camera where nobody can hear, and nobody in the jury could see the tapes until after they voted, so any excuse of "it was strategy and part of the game" just didn't cut it, because nothing they said in there would have affected the game in any way. All it did was reveal some very serious flaws in their personalities.
Oh well, it's just a show. I do happen to believe "reality show" is a misnomer though. While an interesting psychological study, these shows aren't reality, they're game shows. There is a lot of distaste out there for such programming, even hatred, that I think is misplaced unless there is as much animosity for Jeopardy or Wheel Of Fortune. I have a feeling that it would be less pronounced if they would actually call them game shows, which is what they are, because then there would be no way to complain that they "don't represent reality." There would still be the usual backlash towards any television that achieves any sort of popularity, but that can't be helped. There are just going to be people who can't stand popular success so they need to complain, or at least show off their intellectual superiority. Yes, there are going to be people who just don't like the shows, but I know when I just don't like something I just don't watch it and then I don't bitch about the program because I have better ways to expend my energy, and I really can't get worked up enough to hate a television show so much that I need to constantly degrade it.

I shimmer in the emptiness
a star blinding in brilliance
but cold to the touch.
Breathless in the void
I seek the quiet
the solitude
the dark.
Voices shrill in amplitude
Drive me up in altitude.
Being alone is underrated.
Sometimes you just need it,
need to get away.
Calm and tranquility
away from people and places
and work and play.
Relax and get to know yourself.
I shimmer in the emptiness
a star blinding in brilliance
but cold to the touch.
Peace.

I can't wait to get my own place again. Sure, it'll be more costly and I will miss most of my roommates, but I've no doubt that the upside will be worth it. No dogs, more privacy, no worries about other people in the residence being bothered because I'm up to all hours as a result of shift work. One of the reasons I prefer a house to an apartment is being able to do laundry any time of the day, but as it is the machine is still tied up quite often and doing it at night is likely to bring about a complaint from someone downstairs. That right there takes away a major house-living bonus so I might as well be using an apartment's machines.
And speaking of machines, I'd really like to get an elliptical trainer. I don't know why those in particular get my attention, but they do and it would be nice to have that to get some exercise, something I'm in dire need of. Ever since I quit working at the liquor store it's been downhill. Seriously, that job was the best exercise I ever had. I'm considering talking to them about coming back part-time just for the workout it gives. When I do move out, I may need to get a part-time job until my tax debt is paid off, so it may just be the one I'll look into, but only if I can confine myself to working in the back where all the running around and lifting bottles and boxes takes place.

And so it begins, another week of toil and drudgery. Five more days of non-living life ripped from my youth to fade into a repetitive memory. The seconds tick by like an icepick chipping away at my life but there are no tears to shed having long ago been boiled away by my rage, seething and simmering with no release.
Or in other words, another day, another dollar. Ah, it's not so bad as that last paragraph makes it sound, but it was fun to write! I do enjoy getting a paycheque and the roof it keeps over my head is kinda nice as is the food it puts in my tummy. You read me right, I said "tummy". I may bitch a lot but as far as pay goes, this is the best job I've ever had and it ranks right up there with the benefits package. All that's really missing is the nice office with the balcony, and I have my sights set on that sometime in the future as long as I stay with this company and for now I see no reason to even think about leaving.

Today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day! Arrrrrrrrrrr! I'm am going to soooo annoying at work if the scurvy dogs here don't like my swashbuckling linguistics! It's just too much fun and with the splash Pirates of the Caribbean made this year, the buccaneers should be out in full force. Shiver me timbers, this should be a national holiday. An international holiday! I can see greeting cards being sent, gifts bought for friends and family to loot and plunder, and people everywhere decked out in pirate costumes. Oh yeah!
Of course it would all be ruined for me if Texas decides to execute its prisoners by walking the plank instead of injecting them with poison, but that's really a pointless non sequitor that completely came from nowhere, other than my not caring much for Texas or its high prisoner death toll.
Arrrrrrr! But that's not in the fun spirit of International Talk Like a Pirate
Day! We need parades with floats decked out like pirate galleons with cannons that shoot confetti and streamers at the people on the sidewalks! And frankly I wouldn't be too upset if Canada changed from the dollar to the dubloon. Arrrr...

I was training a couple of new employees at work today. Not the most exciting news, but it is important because it shows I've reached a level of trust and respect at this company that they're willing to let me do that. Cool.

I really wanted to see Mars when it was the closest to Earth it's been in millennia. I don't mean I wanted to go there, though that would be the most incredible thing ever. I just wanted to go out with a telescope into the country, or to an observatory which would be even better, and just look at it. I remember looking at Jupiter through a telescope in the country once and being able to make out some of its moons. It was all so tiny yet all so awe-inspiring to know the size of that planet and to know it's just out there, a few short steps away in a cosmic sense.
As much as I love living in the city, the night sky in the country is just about the closest thing I get to a spiritual experience. I know I've said that before, but the recent proximity of the red planet just reminds me of it all. The universe is just so very grand, so immensely old, and we're all made of the same stuff, and all the stuff is equally ancient. Everything that goes into making our bodies is billions of years old. Sure, maybe the configuration that makes us as individuals is brand new, two or three decades (or more) and changing constantly, but building a new wall out of rocks doesn't make those rocks any less old.
I don't know about you, but that makes me feel immortal in an ethereal sort of way.

Ah, day shifts. Ah, early Sunday mornings that I originally had off but co-workers quitting without notice cost me. Ah, busy days. Ah, starting to get sniffly again with an itchy throat just after I started feeling better. Ah, have to wait until tomorrow to go to the bank to cash my paycheque. Ah, five more days until a real weekend. Ah, crap.
Now I get to go home then go to bed early tonight. Wah wah, I know. Bitch, whine, complain. But hey, I can try to be vary how I do it...
My eyes are so heavy, I really need sleep,
I'm working on days like an obedient sheep.
My days off were screwed, it pisses me off.
And all these days later I still need to cough.
Poor miserable me, my damned life is the pits,
But at least I'm not running around with the sh...
Nah. I'll stick with prose.

Oh no! Only ten minutes left and I'm off work, then I need to go catch my train. I know I haven't been writing much this week, but there are days it's pretty busy and there are days I just don't feel like writing. Even then I feel it's good to type away, to at least express myself a little. Besides that, there's all you, my adoring fans! I promise, the autographed photos are in the mail!
Speaking of autographed photos, I do have a small collection of them. Unfortunately, many of them got damaged in the basement flooding of last year. Anyway, I wrote to Shirley Maclaine about this, having had one from her, and this past Wednesday a new one arrived in the mail with the inscription, "Stay dry." That alone has earned that picture a special place in my collection.
So I'm out of here for a day, then I'm back for another six day week. Oy.

Dagnabit, I'm really craving a muffin right now. I'm not even particular about what kind, but just a nice, moist, yummy muffin. That's all I can think about, and it's driving me crazy. I don't even have a doughnut shop nearby to go get one. I might be able to stop by a convenience store on my way home and see if they have any wrapped up ones. That'll do. But man, do I need a muffin.
The coughing is subsiding dramatically, so maybe that's contributing to this craving because I am feeling much better finally. That would make sense, because I haven't been eating all that much lately. There would be the occasional day where I'd eat when I'd get home, but not much. Now I could really use a snack to take care of this peckish feeling.
Mmmmmmm... muffins.

You know, I just realized today that the novelty song appears to be in decline. Sure, Weird Al may still be cranking out the spoof CD's, but the good novelty songs no longer seem to be climbing up the charts. I'm talking about songs like "Don't Worry, Be Happy" or "Shaddap You Face." Where did they all go to? Did they get lost on the music industry's cynical cash grabbing frenzy of boy bands and American Idol winners? Damn it, music today is either too shallow, too serious, or too posturing. Give me another Camp Grenada song, dagnabit!

Never mind about the new game I was talking about last night. It turns out to be a lot faster to finish than Morrowind, and you can't go back to work on sub-quests after finishing the main one. I think all in all it took me about 40 hours. So why aren't I naming this game? Because I'm ashamed of the sheer geek factor involved, even if I didn't buy the damned thing. But I guess it doesn't matter, because I've been playing a video game RPG! The name of this one is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It's very well done, but I have to tell you, Morrowind has me spoiled.
Good news on the health issue; the coughing is subsiding. Does this mean it's finally going away? About time, if you ask me, which you didn't. (Update: I just had a horrible sneezing fit. Oy.)

Cough. Cough. Yes, I still have a cough. I had enough of it the other day and went to see a doctor who prescribed me some antibiotics, but she didn't tell me what she thinks I have. It better be an infection, because I would never take antibiotics for a virus. They just don't work.
I'm also addicted to another role-playing game on my roommate's XBox. You'd think I'd know better by now. I pick these things up to take a look and see what they're like, and next thing you know I spend most of my weekend off playing the damned thing, and I can't wait to get home to play some more. Aaaaaargh!

I'm starting to wonder if this really is a cold I have, or if it was one and has become something else. There have been moments today where I've had trouble breathing and those usually end up in some big coughing fits. Maybe I'm just getting paranoid because it's been five days now and I'm tired of all of this. At least I'm off again for another two days, so it was a wonderfully short work week at least.

Yikes! I watched Chicago yesterday and talk about a brilliant, original movie! I loved it. A musical lives and dies by its song and dance numbers, and this didn't fail to deliver. Even Richard Gere, whom I'm normally not a big fan of, had a strong voice and danced well, and he was completely entertaining in the speaking parts too. Rene Zelwegger and Catherine Zeta-Jones and Queen Latifah... wow. This film thoroughly earned its Best Picture Oscar at last year's awards.
I also watched Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers last night and, well, I still consider the series overrated. It wasn't a bad movie, but some of the CGI was obvious, as was some of the green screen, the tree creature things looked like muppets, and the dialogue and a couple of scenes, well, pure cheese. There was this one scene where Gandolf showed up on a white horse surrounded by white light that had me laughing out loud, as did the occasional "serious" uttering from other characters. Maybe it's me, but I don't think it's good to be laughing when you're not supposed to and remaining stone silent when laughter is expected.
Ah well. Now that I've alienated any LotR fans who read this, I can give an update on my cold. I still have it, but it is going away and isn't anywhere near as bad as it was the past couple of days. Yeesh, nothing like spending time off from work on the couch with a box of tissues and a bag of assorted throat lozenges. That's okay, if I'm feeling better tomorrow than I am today, then my next days off should be much... Okay, maybe not much better, but they should be less of a drag.
