And so 2003 comes to an end. The most important thing to think about when looking back is did we learn anything?
We learned not to mess with the U.S.! Watch out, tin-pot dictators with crappy armies and no ties to September 11, 'cause they're coming for you and there is oil to be had and in 2004, an election to be won! The other day I saw a professional wrestler beating up an 8-year-old bully, and I thanked the wrestler for defending our way of life.
We learned that "same-sex marriage" is a combination of words that will DOOM US ALL FOR LOSING OUR COLLECTIVE MORAL COMPASS! We started to legalize it in Canada, making me proud of our nation twice in one year (the other time when we refused to go to Iraq to fight an illegal war), but then the frothing at the mouth from those who don't believe in equality or sane laws started, and it looks like our new prime minister may stop the whole process in its tracks.
We learned that decriminalizing small quantities of pot give the American embassador cause to lecture us. The prick. Really, look at how well the War on Drugs is going down there, then tell us we'd be better off throwing young people in jail and destroying their lives more than smoking a joint ever would. And at least we don't have war criminals in charge whose policies kill thousands of innocents.
We learned that Michael Jackson is somewhat messed up. D'uh.
On a personal point, I learned that I was able to clear up a massive dept in about a year, and that made me feel good. Now my paycheques are fun to look at.
Anyway, I've got plans tonight so I'm at work. I've gotta go, so have a Happy New Year!

Here's a little thought to ponder... Many people in power in the United States right now are evangelical Christians who believe that we are in the biblical "End Times", so maintaining the environment for future generations doesn't matter to them, as they believe very soon it won't matter. Because of this, they feel okay pursuing profit over protecting the planet. I know, I thought there was something about rich men, camels, and eyes of needles in the book too.
Now, many of these self same rich fundamentalists have for some time been arguing for an end to estate taxes. Money that is inherited should be tax-free. Fair enough I say, believe it or not. It was already taxed once, I would hope, when it was originally made. However, where I'm confused is how estate taxes matter if the "End Times" are here. If there won't be future generations around to breathe clean air, who's going to inheriting all that tax-free money?

The weather here was unseasonably beautiful at Christmas, and I was hoping it would stay that way for New Year but it doesn't look like it. That's a shame, because I plan to go to the celebration downtown this year, much of which is outdoors. Layers. The secret to staying warm in the winter is to dress in layers, and if this coldness keeps going on I'll have to do just that. I just don't want to overheat during any indoor parts of the night. I'm also not planning on taking a purse. Just the money I need tucked somewhere safely away, that way I'll be able to concentrate on enjoying myself, not worrying about keeping my stuff safe.
Not that I won't have to stay alert. I'll be taking one of my roommate's kids, and with those crowds I'll have to keep on my toes to keep from losing sight of each other.

So did everyone have a good Winter Holiday Day? I've noticed a lot more whining this year about "Season's Greetings" and such, "We're still a predominately Christian country and we shouldn't kowtow to the heathens!" or something like that. This isn't just happening in Canada either. I was reading an article in a British newspaper the other day with similar moaning.
I can't speak as a Brit, but I can speak as a Canadian (and not an immigrant either, which I have a strong feeling is an underlying part of the complaints) when I say I'm glad we're becoming more secular. Just as most people don't wish Christians a Happy Ramadan or a Joyous Yom Kippur, is it too much to ask for the Merry Christmases to be kept amongst yourselves?
I'd expect that many would reply to that with "the reason for the season" nonsense, but that would just get me started on how our pagan ancestors would celebrate the solstice around this time of year, and how the early Christians would plaster events quite arbitrarily on top of the pagan holidays so they could keep their festivities and still convert. So if you want to go with the reason for the season, at least wish me a Happy Yule.

I'm addicted to Neopets online. Yes, that's right. That's why I haven't been writing much. Every time I get a new addiction, it takes me away from my blog. But this time I have a very cute excuse!

I'm switching from day shifts to evening shifts without benefit of days off in between, so I have to stay up tonight and get turned around. This means I am so friggin' tired right now.

The irony is that I wrote here more when I could only get online from work than I do when I got Internet access back at home.
I had a bit of a scare last night. Now I work all hours and usually have little to no problem walking around by myself at night. I'm still as cautious as any sane woman, hell, any sane human being should be, but I don't feel the need to be escorted around everywhere like some I know.
Anyway, I went out last night expecting to get a ride home. That fell through, but in order to even find that out I had to find a payphone that accepted credit cards. The first one I came across, I tried twice and both times it didn't work, so if I find those attempts on my bill I will be pissed. That meant I had to go searching for another one. Seeing a 7-Eleven, I figured they'd probably have one, if not, maybe I could borrow their phone. Well, they did have one to work, but as I was using it I saw some guy come up on the other side and I didn't like the way he was looking at me. When I finished my call and knew I'd have to take a cab home, I walked around the man giving him a wide berth and went inside the store to ask them to call a taxi for me.
While inside, a cab did pull up but that one belonged to another man who had come in to buy something as well, so I asked the employee if he'd call for me. Good customer service, he was not only willing to do so, but was very good about it, even to the point of willing to stay on hold on a Friday night when cabs are harder to come by.
Anyway, while he was on the phone, I saw a cab pull up outside. I was wondering if I should go see if he was available when he flashed his lights at me. Maybe he knew I was in need of his services. Letting the employee know I was going to check, I went outside to talk to him. Sure enough, he was available, so I signalled to the kind cashier that I didn't need him to keep calling, and got into the car.
It turns out that this was the same cab I saw earlier. The previous passenger had pointed out that I was going to call for a ride, and both of them had not only noticed the man who had me worried but others as well, and apparently they had seen them looking at me in such a way that they too were concerned.
Now whether there was any real cause for worry, I don't know. Did they have rape or mugging on their minds, something else, or nothing at all? I don't know. I'm glad I never had to find out.

It's probably from the dentist visit yesterday, but I've been feeling horrible all day. The worst part of the visit was that in one of the shots they gave me there was, I believe this is what they said it was, a little ephedrine. Or something. All I know is that I was laying there with my mouth wide open when I could feel my heart pounding faster and stronger than it should have been. Normally there is the whole physical exertion or fear that accompanies such a feeling to make it normal, but none of that was there. Just the pounding heart. It was one of the freakiest, most disconcerting things I've ever felt in my life and I never want to feel it again. Once was bad enough.

Heh. Here I am back online at home and it's taken me four days to write in here. Sorry about that, but I've been really tired. So much so that I overslept today. Nothing like waking up, looking at your clock, and letting out a horrified "SHIT!" Ah well, I was able to take a cab and get there not too terribly late. A little smelly though, because I didn't have time to shower.
After work I had a dentist appointment, and you know how fun those are. Got one tooth filled and the roots of one of my broken wisdom teeth pulled. Now I just need to get to bed early tonight.

It's the most wonderful time of the year! But for one really big reason in my life... My tax debt is paid off! Holy crap, you have no idea how much I owed or how much it's been affecting my paycheques, but it's all okay now because it's done!
Not only did I finally get it paid off, but there was enough left over that they sent me a cheque, and a check that was big enough that I don't have to go in to work today to pick up my paycheque. That means I get to really enjoy my day off and that's always a good thing. Oh man, am I in a good mood right now. Yesterday I was back online at home, today my biggest debt is paid off, I can only dread what horrors tomorrow is going to bring to make me pay for these good days.
Yes, I can find the dark clouds surrounding the shiniest of silver linings. But I'm paid up now! Yay!

Two things...
First, I personally believe that all the men who buy penis enlarging products through spam e-mails deserve every penny they're ripped off.
Second, I'm at home! Whoo hoo! I'm back online from the old homestead once again!

An American company has bought 10% of shares of Hudson's Bay Company, Canada's, and one of the world's, oldest. The Bay, a department store, is a Canadian institution, and it also owns Zellers, our Wal-Mart competition. This American company now wants to buy HBC outright. I don't have the finances to do it, but I hope wealthy Canadians can show a little patriotic pride and not allow this to happen. I know, fat chance of that happening. But still, I can always hope The Bay will remain now and for always a Canadian company.

Can you feel it in the air? The joy, the excitement, the warmth of human spirit, all just hanging there like carcinogenic smog choking the lungs of people all over the western world? Yes, Christmas in on its way! But don't think of me as one of those bah humbug types. I used to really love this time of year, then I was apathetic as I stopped doing Christmas altogether. Now I'm more ambivalent than anything else. Maybe it's being in a house with my roommates and the kids.
I still don't love it as much as I used to, and I'm only really celebrating with the people I live with, but I will at least acknowledge it now. Well, until someone else complains about "remembering the reason for the season!" I do remember the reason for the season, thankyouverymuch. It's the winter solstice that our pagan ancestors used to celebrate because it meant the worst of the darkness was over and the days would then start getting longer again. It was only when trying to convert those pagans that the early Christians started appropriating their holidays and attaching Christian aspects to them. If Jesus actually existed, it's actually more likely he was born in July. Nope, this time of year springs from pagan solstice celebrations.
So, remember the REAL reason for the season! Ho ho ho!

I've got Johnny on the mind! Yes, I watched the movie last night. I know I don't even have to name it. I fell asleep while watching it though, even with the presence of The Depp in it. Hey, I had two hours of sleep the night before so I think nodding off is justified. Then after going back to the spot I last remembered and making it through the film, I went upstairs and watched some of the extras from disk 2 in my room until somewhat after 1am. I worked at 8am today. I'm an idiot.

I didn't get to watch my Pirates of the Carribean DVD after I bought it yesterday because I had a Magic tournament last night, but I don't see anything keeping me back from watching it tonight except maybe my 1-2 hours of sleep keeping me from staying awake. But still, it is Johnny Depp. How can I feel tired watching him? It just doesn't seem possible.

The countdown is on to getting the Internet at home again and I can't wait. I can't tell you how often I think of something to write about only to not remember what it is when I sit down at this computer at work. Okay, I can tell you. It's a lot. Too often it happens. But soon! Oh yes, soon I will be able to write in comfort once again!

This is the end of my work week, but I have to come back here tomorrow for the staff Christmas party. Well, I don't have to, but you know, office politics and all that nonsense. Besides, they might have our bonus cheques here then, and I can use it.
Oh, and "cheques" is the proper way to spell it. A "check" is a mark you make beside a correct answer, you silly Americans, not a piece of paper you can exchange for money! You can get them in different colours too.

Pirates of the Carribean is out on video and DVD today. If you haven't seen it yet, what's wrong with you? Yeesh. It's only the best movie EVER!

I'll be back online at home on the 10th. Damn, I can't wait.

My dirty little secret is that I enjoy WWE wrestling. However, I am getting really sick of their anti-French bullshit. So France didn't help participate in an illegal war. Get over it.

Ahhhhhh, the downstairs roommates are gone. We're going to move all the computers downstairs today (I'll have to wait until I get home) then we'll get the Internet hooked back up. Whoo hoo! Damn, I miss my por... I mean poor chat buddies. Yeah, that's the ticket.
Before that though, I guess I should go grab a desk and get to work. Yay.
