I went to my first improv workshop on Wednesday, five more weeks to go. It's hard stuff, let me tell you. I have a whole new appreciation for people that do it on a regular basis. Advancing dialogue can be very, very hard to do, and I have so much more work to do on it. Luckily I have no plans on actually going on stage to do it.
When I do come up with dialogue, I've noticed one of my flaws is to go loud. When in doubt, shout.
The flaw I didn't notice but was brought up was my tendancy to "gag", that is, go for the joke instead of advancing the story. Once this was mentioned to me, I could definitely see it. That is going to be really tough to get past as my comedy instincts keep kicking in and my natural tendency is to go for the laugh.
At least having comedy instincts is a good thing. The instructor told me if I'm going to have a flaw, he'd rather it be that than not being able to be funny at all.
