Remember the Disney animation renaissance? That sweet little period of time after a moribund animation studio really had nothing to show for itself worth talking about until The Little Mermaid, then pretty much ended after The Lion King. That was nice. They've done some okay animated films since then, some of them even quite amusing, but nothing that really took my breath away like the two mentioned plus Aladdin and the one that to me was the pinnacle of their creativity and my all-time personal favourite, Beauty and the Beast.
It would be nice if they could come out with a traditionally animated film to that level of overall quality again.
I'm not including the Disney/Pixar computer animated movies here. Those are in another category and are themselves amazing works. Now that they've split company, Disney is going the computer route by themselves so it'll be interesting to see how that works out. Will they start to flounder like their traditional films have in terms of story, entertainment value and such?
This will be particularly visible when they do Toy Story 3 without Pixar. Talk about a legacy that is difficult to live up to under the best of circumstances. Disney really has their work cut out for them on this one.
I'm rooting for them to do well though. Despite what I may think of the megacorporation as a whole, they have their good points and have been a progressive company in some aspects. A little overbearing when it comes to copyright laws and trying to have them changed. But that's the corporation, not the talented and creative men and women who work to entertain. For them and for us, I hope they do well and give us some more great movies, both traditionally and computer animated.
