I've been buying up television on DVD like crazy. Well, not like crazy but more than I should be. A few weeks ago I bought Firefly, the Xena 10th Anniversary collection, and the first season of Gilligan's Island. All good stuff, but shows I was familiar with.
Yesterday I felt like picking something else up, so I went to Futureshop and looked around. American Gothic was a draw, and came very close to being my purchase. There were some other possibilities too. But the one that won out was original BBC version of The Office.
I've been watching the NBC version with Steve Carrell and enjoying it greatly, and have heard nothing but glowing reviews for the original for some time now. So what the heck, I bought it. Good choice. This show is brilliant! Being made for British television, it has far fewer constraints on it than the American remake so that yes, there is swearing and a giant inflatable penis. But they're also more willing to touch on things like racism and sexual harrassment a little more, and they aren't afraid to make their "good" office guy (Tim in this version, Jim in the US) look really not so great. I'm loving this show.
