One of these days I'd like to sit down with one of these New Agey people who favour ancient remedies over modern medicine and ask them what they think of things like powered rhino horns, tiger penises, and bear gall bladders. Or is the "ancient wisdom" only relevant and real when it doesn't involve the slaughter of animals?

Speaking of The Office, NBC could use a show that's a good fit with that and My Name is Earl. Why not give Arrested Development a chance now that Fox has officially cancelled it? It would bring what audience it has with it, and if they put it between Earl and Office their audience would be introduced to it. That, and the critics would absolutely love the network for taking the chance.
Damn it, NBC, take the chance!

I've been buying up television on DVD like crazy. Well, not like crazy but more than I should be. A few weeks ago I bought Firefly, the Xena 10th Anniversary collection, and the first season of Gilligan's Island. All good stuff, but shows I was familiar with.
Yesterday I felt like picking something else up, so I went to Futureshop and looked around. American Gothic was a draw, and came very close to being my purchase. There were some other possibilities too. But the one that won out was original BBC version of The Office.
I've been watching the NBC version with Steve Carrell and enjoying it greatly, and have heard nothing but glowing reviews for the original for some time now. So what the heck, I bought it. Good choice. This show is brilliant! Being made for British television, it has far fewer constraints on it than the American remake so that yes, there is swearing and a giant inflatable penis. But they're also more willing to touch on things like racism and sexual harrassment a little more, and they aren't afraid to make their "good" office guy (Tim in this version, Jim in the US) look really not so great. I'm loving this show.

DICK CHENEY SHOOTS MAN IN FACE

...At a press conference following the incident where he shot a 78-year-old lawyer in the face, the Vice President opened fire, shooting three reporters and his press secretary in the face, shouting, "Bring it on! Come on, any more of you punks have any 'questions' for me?"
While making air quotes around the word "question", Cheney forgot he had his shotgun in his hand and accidently shot a White House maintenance worker in the face.
Calming down to a condition those present could only describe as "pissed off", Cheney stormed out of the building muttering to himself about "the most dangerous game". He was last seen driving towards the vicinity of the Golden Sunset Retirement Home on Fudd Avenue, a favoured retirement community for local elderly attorneys.

Ha HA! Harper is barely sworn in as prime minister and he's already horribly disappointing his supporters and wallowing in hypocrisy! The same man who had lots to say when Belinda Stronach left the Tories and crossed the floor the ruling Liberals landing a nice little cabinet post at the same time had no issues with giving a cabinet post to a former Liberal who crossed the floor to the ruling Conservatives just two weeks after the election. At least Stronach had an excuse, not being comfortable with the stance of her former party on same-sex marriage and other social issues. What excuse does David Emerson have? There are a lot of long-time, long-suffering Conservatives sitting on the back benches who aren't going to be happy with that.
Then there is the non-elected Michael Fortier who was appointed to the senate so he could be given a cabinet position. Harper had criticized the appointment of senators for years and has said he would only appoint those who have been democratically elected. Well, it didn't take him long to not follow through on that.
Of course they are spinning this like crazy, the Tory MPs are standing behind their man and rationalizing this like there's no tomorrow, and small-L liberals are enjoying ourselves thinking back to the "uniter, not a divider" who wasn't elected but still became president of our southern neighbours a few years back and aren't surprised by a thing here.
