I went to see Gilbert Gottfried live and in concert last night. Well, as much of a concert as a comedy club can be. You know, for someone who loves comedy as much as I do, that was actually my first time ever in a comedy club. Anyway, the point is that he was funny and I had a good time.
Before the show was another story. When I found out he was here, I called right away and ordered a ticket to be picked up. The good news is that it was a sold out show. The bad news was that's the only advantage in buying ahead of time over the phone. There was no second window to pick up tickets, so I had to stand in line for 20 minutes before I was able to pick it up. Joy. Then my seat was nothing to write home about.
But Gilbert Gottfried was funny, as was the MC and the two warm up acts (though the first of them had a slower energy and took a little longer to set up his jokes than people were caring for, but I appreciated and enjoyed his set).
The headliner is of course very famous for his voice, which most people would likely describe as "grating". It is, definitely, but that's his schtick. To change it would be like Seinfeld taking up prop comedy. And it's definitely schtick. After the show, Mr. Gottfried was out selling copies of his DVD and CD, Dirty Jokes, and autographing the purchases. When you're used to his act, it's easy to be taken aback by how soft spoken he is in person. Seriously, he was very quiet. While part of it is most likely his personality, I've no doubt he also speaks a little quieter to save his voice for his performances, as I can see how those could take quite a toll on the larynx.
As for the comedy club, I enjoyed it there and will more likely go there again. I do have a birthday coming up this year, and it would be a nice way to spend it.
