Happy holidays! Yes, "happy holidays". It's not a salvo on this imaginary "War On Christmas" that the poor, downtrodden fundies keep bitching about. I personally celebrate the Winter Solstice. By wishing a "happy holidays", I've covering the fact that there are several holidays at this time of year. It doesn't bother me if you wish me a "Merry Christmas", but I guarantee you the people who are bitching most about "Seasons Greetings" would be the first to bitch about it if they were wished a "Joyous Kwanzaa" everywhere they went.
"This is a Christian country founded on Christian principles, and I'm sick of people coming here and trying to change things!" Oh, shut up. I was born Canadian, as were many, many others that aren't waging a war on Christmas but are tired of blantant attempts to have Christianity foisted on us whether we want it or not. I read the news. I can see what horrors theocracies are and I don't want to see it happen here. After all, if we really are a Christian country founded on Christian principles, why are we suffering witches to live? (And don't tell me there isn't a portion of fundamentalists are who seriously wondering the same thing.)
Anyway, I love old movies. And you know one of the things I love about old movies? They show us that "Happy Holidays", "Seasons Greetings", and "Xmas" have all been around forever, and were used by Christians who weren't trying to force Christ out of Christmas. The recent whining over this is so friggin' obvious it's pathetic. There are Christians who aren't happy unless everyone is forced to participate fully in their religion, and there are Christians who aren't happy unless they can feel like they're repressed and persecuted just as the Bible told them they would be, and when you're the majority religion in a country, you have to find that repression and persecution anywhere you can, even if you have to make it up.
So this holiday season, all the best to you and yours, and please remember the reason for the season... The Winter Solstice. They days are only going to get longer from here, baby! Whoo hoo!
