My heart goes out to the people of New Orleans and surrounding areas, especially those who were unable to evacuate before everything happened. I really don't understand why there wasn't a concerted effort to make sure those who didn't have the means to leave were helped. The Super Dome was only able to take 20,000 people. In a city where somewhere between 20-25% lived in poverty, catastrophic loss of life was inevitable unless every effort was put into getting people out when they could.
Why wasn't every available bus in driving distance made available? Why weren't free flights being made available?
This many people didn't have to die. Not that there wouldn't have been some deaths. There are always people who can't be moved for health or whatever other reasons. There are always going to be be stubborn, stubborn people who refuse to believe it's going to be that bad and will try to ride it out at home. Hey, whatever's coming might end up being not so bad, but if the evacuation order is given, EVACUATE!
The devastation is so much worse than it needed to have been. Damn it.
