How about this, a hockey related post. No, I'm not jumping on the Oilers bandwagon. It'll be nice for this city if they win, but I won't be heartbroken if they don't.
That all said, shocker of shockers, Stephen Harper has pissed me off. He was in town for the last Oilers homegame, and he refused to wear a jersey. His excuse? His riding is in Calgary and the pictures could be used against him.
Bullshit. He's a Conservative MP from Alberta. He could wear the Oilers jersey and eat a live puppy on live television and still get re-elected. Ralph Klein, the province's premier, has worn an Oilers jersey plenty of times and still got re-elected in his Calgary riding.
So why did Harper really refuse to wear it? My guess is to avoid looking "goofy" or "non-prime ministerial". He's not worried about his opponents in Calgary, he's worried about his opponents on a national level. There's nothing he wants more than to form a majority government, and he's willing to avoid showing a little national pride as long as it results in pictures of him looking a little less like the statesman he isn't.
